Prerequisites and Procedures

MIL-STD-1388-1A

This now obsolete, but yet frequently prescribed American standard – arguably the "archetype" of Logistics Engineering – specifies the guidelines and requirements for conducting LSA in the context of an Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) programm. This is essentially a collection of methods and tools that requires careful selection and application in each individual case before initiating the order or commencing work. The activities of more than 100 individual tasks described here cover the entire LE range in individual groups, from planning up to validation.

ASD S3000L

ASD S3000L was drafted in 2005 after the repeal of MIL-STD-1388-1A and the highly localised tailoring of DOD-0060 (UK), becoming the European successor in the ASD-suite. Incorporating the core principles of its predecessors, it contains procedural descriptions and prerequisites when it comes to maintainability, reliability and optimisation of the life cycle costs.

The requirement to define a precise activity between all project participants is the basis for implementing the project.

Project-specific Provisions

Due to their universal applicability, the standards and specifications upon which all Logistics Engineering activities are based involve a compilation of methods and procedures, whose application must be coordinated in order to meet the specific project’s requirements.

What’s more, these refer to additional standards such as MIL-STD or -HDBK, but also to civilian regulations for specific activities and more detailed analysis. In this respect, the lack of specifications at this point is not a shortcoming – rather, it allows for a precise, project-specific definition of the activities to be performed in joint coordination our and your customers.
